Exercise Hatemalo
One of the important roles of Nepali Army in disaster preparedness is to conduct seminars, workshops, exercises and exchange of knowledge among national and international government and non-government agencies that directly and indirectly contribute to disaster management in Nepal. “Exercise-HATEMALO”, which translates to “Join hands” is one of the most important exercises of the Government of Nepal, that is hosted by Nepali Army. To date 6 sessions of the exercises are conducted, which includes the stakeholders from the government and non-government sector who play roles in disaster response in the country. The exercises create a theme and the representatives from different agencies exercise their role in the theme. The exercise aims to familiarize the stakeholders with the prevailing legislative provisions, develop and exercise coordinating mechanisms, practice civil-military coordination, and exercise technical, logistic, communication aspects in possible disaster response in future.
PACIFIC ANGEL 17
PACANGEL 17 was a joint and combined humanitarian assistance engagement. During this exchange, approximately 65 members of the U.S. military, in partnership with Government of Nepal, local non-governmental organizations and Nepali Army trained together by providing medical, dental, optometric, and engineering assistance, and conducting subject matter expert exchanges in Gorkha and Kathmandu, Nepal. Throughout the 8-day engagement, Nepali Army and U.S. forces also partnered with local schools and health clinics to repair and update infrastructure. This exchange program helped understand and increase interoperability by learning best medical practices from one another, while giving back to the community as friends, partners, and allies.
SMEE Exchange Programme
A 5 day "Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HA/DR) Subject Matter Expert Exchange Program" was conducted between Nepali Army and United States Armed Forces from 11 December to 15 December 2023. Experts from both forces joined hands and shared their knowledge on HAZMAT, CSSR, High Rise Building Fire Fighting and Advance Burn Treatment culminating in a scenario based exercise on the last day.
Regional DREE-Guam
A team of 20 Nepalese personnel including 16 Nepali Army participated in South Asian region's first ever Disaster Response and Exchange Exercise (DREE). The 10 day DREE focused on disaster management and response operations was held in Guam. Military and civil representatives from the U.S, Singapore, India, Nepal, Laos, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar exchanged knowledge and identify areas for improvement in their disaster response frameworks.
